Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) is the perfect timber for the creation of fine furniture.
It is a hardwood that is easily worked, stable, long lasting and radiates subtle beauty. The variety of tonings ranging from light golden brown to deep brown, sometimes with a reddish tint and occasionally showing black streaks, make Tasmanian Blackwood a classic furniture timber. Further individuality is contributed by the grain. Sometimes it is straight, but sometimes wavy, producing a fiddleback pattern on an open and uniform texture, always with its own luster.
Tasmanian Blackwood occurs sporadically across a broad range of vegetation types. It ranges from the far north to the very south of Tasmania, regenerates easily and, as a young tree, grows quickly. Nearly all Tasmanian Blackwood comes from the blackwood swamps around Smithton in the north west, where almost pure stands of blackwood trees occur.
Here the harvest is strictly controlled and the forest is managed on a 70 year rotation. This program protects the continuity of this limited resource and guarantees a small but reliable supply of excellent mature logs each year.
More importantly, this cyclic harvest, combined with natural revegetation, guarantees the unique tasmanian blackwood resource will always be here. Sustainabilty of these forests is achieved through compliance with the Forest Practices Code and Regional Forests Agreement.
We use Tasmanian Blackwood on many of our classic Australian made Lounge suites and Imported Dining Settings & Wall Units.
On a sad note, our co-founder Howard Lindsey passed away on 9th April 2014 at the age of 91.
Howard co founded Tessa in 1968 with his brother, the late Fred Lowen AM, after leaving FLER Furniture.
Howards career in the furniture industry spanned over thirty years working with FLER and subsequently TESSA in management and administration. His contribution to the establishment of Tessa as a national and global brand was immense until he decided to retire from the business in the 1980’s.
Howard was a caring man who took the time to get to know his colleagues and employees as people. He was still involved with Tessa as our landlord here at Bayswater and he always took an active interest in the ongoing development of our business.
He continued to be involved in the local community after his retirement as a very active member of the Bayswater Rotary Club.
Howard will be sadly missed by all at Tessa Furniture and his family and friends.
Leather will stretch and develop creases and wrinkles over time as it used. Our Leather is 100% cowhide and is therefore a completely natural product – like timber – which sets it apart from other artificial materials with its growth marks, whip scars and grain variation.
Keep your furniture away from direct heating sources and also direct sunlight. This will reduce the risk of the leather drying out. Keep the leather pores free from dust particles by vacuum cleaning regularly. Wipe the leather with a soft damp cloth every 2 – 3 weeks. In addition, clean the leather with a proprietary brand “soft cleaner” such as Leather Master or Pelle as required. In order to retain the softness and attractiveness of your leather furniture, it is recommended that a “Leather Cream” be applied as required. The frequency of application depends on the environment that the furniture is in but no more than 2 – 3 times per year.
